The summertime is the most popular season to visit the Luberon in Provence, France. It may be the hottest time of the year but despite the scorching dryness the landscape, thanks to the abundant evergreen oaks, cedars and olive trees, remains green and inviting.

The average lifespan of a cicada can be up to 17 years, although with around 3,000 varieties this can vary widely. Growing up to 5.5cm in length, these insects were regarded by ancient Chinese culture as powerful symbols of rebirth.
During the summer in Provence, the rows of vibrant green vines and purple fields of lavender are at their peak. A drive along the winding mountain roads from Apt to Sault, during July, reveal the stunning patchwork views of the lavender fields, while the luscious green rolling vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are worth seeing during August before the grapes are picked in the autumn.
The Provençal markets are in full swing during June, July and August. It is advisable to arrive at your chosen market(s) early to avoid the worst of the crowds, the heat and the inevitable battle for a parking space. The market stalls, groaning under the weight of locally grown soft fruits and vegetables are a real spectacle, while roadside vendors are plentiful offering fresh produce, including nectarines, strawberries, melons and locally produced goods such as honey, wine and olive oil.

For anyone hoping to hike through the hectares of stunning Luberon forests, summer can be a frustrating time. During periods of particularly dry weather it may be necessary for the local Mairie to prevent access to the forests and footpaths that fall under their jurisdiction, due to concerns over the risk of fire.
Domestic bonfires in the Luberon region are banned throughout the summer period as part of regular measures taken to prevent forest fires and low flying spotter planes, searching for signs of trouble, are a common sight .
Local fêtes, fairs and open air concerts are commonplace in the area throughout the summer. Parties and festivities are held for the National Holiday, 14th July, and as the summer progresses many towns and villages hold their local fêtes or Fêtes Votives, with live music, fairground rides, huge buffets and firework displays.
Early mornings are the time to get things done in Provence during the summer because of the heat; so that by lunchtime visitors are more than ready to enjoy a languid lunch with regional cheeses, salads and fruits all washed down with a local rosé. Then it must be time for a siesta under a shady olive tree or a cooling dip in the pool.
